Ahummta was a Goddess of striking beauty and great vanity; so great was her vanity that she was very choosy who was allowed to gaze upon her. Her tailor, Spider, was instructed to weave her new robes every morning, but even he was not allowed to gaze upon her. It should be mentioned that in those days, Spider had but two eyes and two legs, like all men.
And, as all men are wont to, Spider felt tempted to gaze upon Ahummta’s beauty. And, one day, he gave in to that temptation, and he opened his eyes to gaze upon her as he finished his weaving. And, lo, so beautiful was Ahammta to his gaze that Spider could not take in all of her. Thus did Spider grow another set of eyes to be able to behold all of Ahummta’s beauty, but still it was not enough. Thus did he grow yet another pair, and yet another pair until finally Spider had eight eyes with which to gaze upon Ahummta’s form. But in that moment did Ahummta notice Spider breaking her commandment that he never gaze upon her. Spider, fearful, began to run away, but Ahummta was close upon his heels. Thus did Spider grow another pair of legs so that he could run faster, but Ahummta kept gaining upon him. So Spider grew a third pair of legs upon which to run, but alas, that still did not allow him to run fast enough to get away, so he grew a fourth pair of legs, and finally, he could run so fast that Ahummta could not catch him. But Ahummta has the final word: she cursed Spider to stay as he was, and that is why spiders weave their webs today with eight eyes and eight legs.
