Paronaioc, The Enemy Within, Patron of Cannibals, Madmen and Flies

Primary: Trickery
Secondary: Strategy, Suspicion, Slaughter
Inclinations:
Harmony: Control
Balance: Destruction, Transformation
Opposition: Creation

Description: Paronaioc is remarkably self-effacing, preferring to appear as a bland, average person of either gender, however is most appropriate to his angle of attack. He can appear as one of the downtrodden, or a member of the elite, with little to no difficulty. When his plans have born bloody fruit, he then appears in his true form: a hideous agglomeration of skin, muscle, and bone woven from those who died as a result of his foul machinations, shrieking with hideous, contemptuous laughter.

He has good reason to laugh.

Personality/M.O.: It's so easy, really. First, he appears to either a member of the downtrodden, victimized minority, or he'll appear to a member of the current elite, one who secretly feels that the downtrodden aren't downtrodden enough. Then he appears to the other one, setting them against each other. If each side worships different gods, so much the better. His choicest preference is when one side is human, and the other side is one of the Elder Races. (Salamanders are his favorite.)

Ever hear that song In the Hall of the Mountain King? That's Paronaioc's theme song: slow and creepy at first, building in volume and tempo until a shattering climax. That's precisely how he turns people against each other. Only at the end, when people are each other's throats, does he reveal his true form, attacking and feeding off the Terror from his revelation. Until then, he slowly feeds off of the Terror generated by people doing increasingly horrible things to each other under his guidance. He's notoriously triggered feuds between gods, and attacked them when they were exhausted from fighting each other. And no matter how successful he is, no matter how many deities cry for his soul, he still manages to get away and do the same thing somewhere else. He is widely considered the most dangerous Leviathan in existence.

Weakness: If someone unravels and reveals his conspiracy, and his dupes are forced to admit they were duped, he can do nothing but retreat. As a past-master of Trickery, that's no easy task.

Favored Miracles: (I don't have any ideas at the moment. Anyone got any ideas?)

Darn, I've left out the best part!

Origin: The story of Paronaioc is a tale often told by more established, powerful gods to new ones, usually free of charge. It is a convenient, poignant cautionary tale.

Paronaioc used to be Patronius, a new god of heroes encouraging resistance among the slaves of the salamanders. He was a god of forthright heroism, and expected honor and mercy from his favored followers. Sadly, he was naive, and did not control his favorite champion Xandro, who used treacherous and brutal tactics to win the freedom of the slaves. Patronius, infuriated, stripped his hero of power, and issued warnings among his followers to never act in such a fashion again.

Needless to say, his followers rebelled, and began to worship Xandro as their new god.

Patronius was infuriated. So, they lionized treachery and brutality, did they? Then he, as their rightful god, would give it to them in full measure! Using his (then least preferred) Inclination of Control, he sowed among them seeds of fear, doubt, suspicion, and hatred. Xandro was slain by his own lover with a poisoned knife in the back. By the time Patronius was done, his people had all taken their own lives, leaving their town in blood-soaked ruins. But the damage was done, and Patronius became twisted by his new diet of fear into something almost unrecognizable: a Leviathan.

The only thing left of Patronius in Paronaioc is his weakness: once his grand scheme is uncovered, and his dupes confess to their misdeeds under his guidance, he can pursue his schemes no more. In his mind, his victims have learned their lesson. He is left with no option but to depart.

In a sad, pathetic way, Paronaioc knows what he has done, and part of him still wishes to become a god again. But deep down, he knows that he is too far gone, and it was all by his own hand, guided by his outrage and his moral rigidity. He has completely abandoned the latter, but he refuses still to admit his full culpability to what changed him into a leviathan, and will doubtless continue to do so for the rest of his existence.

Postmodern,

I like this example of a Leviathan! In your writing, you show how the god has fallen from grace and now feeds off of the terror of others. I would like to see some of the miracles he might use. I can see some illusion miracles and miracles that change his form to that of a mortal (or his ghastly appearance). Also since this is a god in harmony with control, there should be a couple of miracles to change people's minds, planting seeds of doubt and hatred. Since control miracles will be opposed by humans or Elder Races, you should also note the dice used.
